Coombs Day Trip from Victoria: Goats on the Roof, Donuts & Nature

Coombs Day Trip from Victoria: Goats on the Roof, Donuts & Nature

Vancouver Island is often associated with well-known destinations like Victoria, Parksville, and Tofino. But on a recent trip, we discovered a lesser-known gem—Coombs—a charming town just about 10 km west of Parksville that made for a perfect day trip. With a thoughtfully planned ride from SkUno, we were able to enjoy a seamless and relaxing day exploring beyond the usual routes.

Our journey began with a scenic stop at Malahat Chalet, where we grabbed a quick bite while soaking in breathtaking views of the Saanich Inlet. The sparkling blue waters framed by mountain ranges made it easy to linger—but there was more to explore.

After another 90-minute drive, we arrived at the iconic Old Country Market. Inspired by Norwegian architecture, this market is famous for its sod-roof building—and yes, the legendary “goats on the roof.” You truly have to see it to believe it. My daughter was completely captivated, watching the goats roam happily above us, until one word finally broke the spell: donuts.

At Billy G's Donut Shop, we discovered some of the best donuts we’ve ever tasted. With over 30 classic and unique flavors, they practically melt in your mouth. Even as non-donut lovers, we couldn’t resist going back for more.

Beyond the sweets, the market offers a delightful mix of a garden center, gift shop, grocery store, and cozy spots for coffee or ice cream—perfect for a relaxed stroll.

Next, we headed to Cathedral Grove, an awe-inspiring old-growth forest home to 800-year-old Douglas fir trees towering up to 80 meters high. The accessible walking paths made it easy to explore, even with a child. Surrounded by towering trees and deep quiet, we felt completely immersed in nature. My daughter was fascinated by the intricate textures and natural carvings in the bark—tiny details shaped over centuries.

Our final stop was Little Qualicum Falls, a beautiful and family-friendly trail loop that takes about 40 minutes to an hour. The path connects both upper and lower falls via scenic bridges, with the lower viewing platform offering a dramatic perspective of the cascading water. It was the perfect, refreshing end to our day.

If you have more time, nearby spots like Cameron Lake or Qualicum Beach are ideal for a picnic or a peaceful unwind before heading back to Victoria.

This day trip reminded us that sometimes the most memorable experiences come from the places you didn’t initially plan to visit.

If you’re looking to explore Vancouver Island beyond the usual routes, consider planning a customized day trip that lets you travel at your own pace.
